Welcome to Colorful Chaos, the blog that will provide tips and tricks for crochet that will be beneficial to all! My goal is to help everyone avoid the dreaded hobby burn out. I would like to take a moment to introduce myself. I also want to provide some information on what I intend to demonstrate through my blog.
About My Chaotic Self
To start, my name is Ciara! I am 27 and happily married. We have a 7-year-old boy that is our whole world as well as 4 fur babies! We have 2 doggos named Medusa and Willow. There’s also 2 kitties in the home named Lady Gaga and Tiger. We have a full house but there is nothing I would change. My whole family is neurodivergent and adds to the chaos. My wife and I both have ADHD while my son has Autism and ADHD.
I work full time in a behavioral health hospital and my wife works full time in a behavioral health clinic. As I am sure you have figured out thus far, mental health is a big deal in our family. This is part of the reason why I felt inclined to create this blog. We understand the struggles of doing everyday chores, let alone the struggle of doing a hobby.
Hobby Burn Out
All of my life I continuously try different hobbies just to burn out on them after a few months. Things like bath bombs, candle making, and more have all led to hobby burn out. If you are like me, you will probably see you have spent hundreds or thousands on different hobbies.
You go through the process of buying all of the supplies and researching to get burnt out too soon. Sometimes you will not even start the hobby before you experience burn out. Other times, you will start it but have several projects you are unable to finish before you burn out. Then you go through the destash phase where you try to rid yourself of all the supplies before you start a new hobby.
I understand the burn out more than I would like to admit. It happens to the best of us and often at the worst of times. This is why I wanted to find a way to avoid burn out any way possible,
The Fairy Dust Burn Out
In 2023, I decided to invest in countless pounds of glitter. Yes, you read that right. POUNDS. I wanted to use the glitter to make jewelry. Fairy dust earrings and necklaces using glitter and cute little trinket bottles. I thought they would be a big hit with all of the friends I had that were into cosplay and fantasy.
Countless hours were spent making different color combinations and putting the jewelry together. I made hundreds of sets.
My mom requested a specific set so I made on for her and she advertised them for me. A friend of mine requested a mommy and me set for herself and her daughter. No one else was interested. I became depressed and found it easy to burn out on this hobby.
The Crystal Burn Out
Not long after the fairy dust phase, I decided to invest in crystals. This is not a cheap thing to invest in for reselling or crafting. I remember ordering thousands of dollars worth of crystals. Placing them into mystery sets, making jewelry with them, even decorating frames and jars with them. Burn out came rather quick with this one but thankfully, I still have plenty of things I created with this for myself.
The Vinyl Burn Out
By the end of 2023, I invested in a cricut so I could make vinyl decals and shirts for myself. I did this for months and was beyond happy. I thought I found something I could stick with. Word got out at work that I was making decals and the requests came in for personalized decals. I of course accepted all of the requests and got to work. Over 200 decals later with several hours of nonstop work put in, and I was tired of doing it. I sold my cricut. The heat press was sold. I sold it all.
How I Became Introduced to Crochet
After all of this, I swore I would not try any more crafts after this because I continued to invest so much money just to find myself with burn out. By the end of 2024 I made it without any new crafts but then, saw an ad on my Facebook for these cute little amigurumi crochet kits. I scrolled past several times just to see them over and over again.
My wife saw me looking at the website that was advertising the kits and said I should give it a shot. Just start out with 1 kit and if I didn’t like it, then it was just $30 wasted rather than a ton. So, I did exactly that. I ordered one kit and ended up getting a second kit for free as a promotion. When I did this, I figured if I don’t like the first kit I try, then I will donate the second and someone else can enjoy it. I was determined to avoid burn out. These kits were advertised to include crochet tips and tricks for beginners. So, I thought this would be a simple thing to learn.
How The Chaos has Subsided
Needless to say, it has been nearly 5 months now and I find myself crocheting nightly as a way to relax after work. I have purchased several kits from this website and continue using the crochet tips and tricks for beginners that I have learned. However, I have also progressed into my own projects. Things such as wearables like headbands and scarves, comfort items like blankets, and more. In my journey, I have discovered how to keep myself from burning out. The way I have done this is by implementing tips and tricks I have learned, and continue learning, in the behavioral health field.
More About the Chaos Within
When I started to crochet, I began trying different things to expand my attention and refrain from burn out. I was at work one day and talking to my supervisor (who also has ADHD, funny enough). We started discussing things I had been trying with crochet to maintain attention, stay organized, and still enjoy it. Thus, the thought of this blog came about. I wanted to not only provide crochet tips and tricks for beginners but also help you avoid burn out.
It dawned on me just how many people are neurodivergent and struggle with the same things I do with hobbies. I wanted to share these crochet tips and tricks for beginners with you all, plus patterns I have created to be neurodivergent friendly! Also, don’t let the word beginners fool you. There are plenty of advanced crocheters who still find these tricks to be beneficial.
Colorful Chaos was the name chose because when you think of yarn, you imagine all of the different color options. Chaos is often what you refer to when thinking about what happens in the head of someone with neurodivergence! I combined these two things and came up with the name and theme of the blog.
Chaotic Accomplishments
My goal with this blog is to help not only neurodivergent individuals but neurotypical individuals as well. Sharing these crochet tips and tricks helps continuing this hobby easy without burn out. These tips can also be helpful for things like schoolwork, house chores, jobs, and more if you simply tweak them.
