Residential Cleaning Businesses

maid

Cleaning is the process of removing unwanted substances, such as dirt, infectious agents, and other impurities, from an object or environment. Cleaning occurs in many different contexts and uses many different methods. Several occupations are devoted to cleaning.

Residential Cleaning

The demand for house and apartment-cleaning services is most popular with people of higher than average wealth looking for a little more free time – especially in two-income households. Market research suggests that the ideal target for clients are married couples with college degrees, 45 years old or older.

FACTS

  • Most house cleaning companies supply their own cleaning products
  • They drive their personal vehicles
  • They drive at least a range of 25-30 miles to your home
  • They pay for their own advertising
  • They pay for their own insurance
  • They set their own appointments to accommodate your schedule

What are your expectations for general cleaning?

  • Vacuuming carpets and floors
  • Sweeping and mopping floors
  • Dusting furniture
  • Dusting ceiling fans
  • Cleaning door handles and light fixtures
  • Dusting windows, windowsills and ledges
  • Linen changing comes at an additional cost
  • Cleaning kitchen appliances on the outside, typically your microwave is cleaned inside
  • Wiping down the outside of the kitchen cabinets
  • Wiping down the countertops

  • Laundry
  • Organization

 Costs

The problem with the expectations of clients that I often find would be the fact that they expect the general cleaning list not to exceed a cost of $100, no matter the size of their home.

The national average cost of house cleaning is $25 to $50 per hour per cleaner. The total price depends on the size of the home, type of cleaning and where you live. A three-bedroom, 2,000-square-foot home costs $150 to $250 to clean on average, while a one-bedroom apartment starts at $80 to $110. (per thumbtack.com).

When you are paying per hour, keep in mind that you can have one person in your house for 4-6 hours depending upon the size of your home.

Some residential cleaning services charge per square foot. The average per square foot ranges between 10 cents for a general house cleaning to 15 cents for deep cleaning or move in/ move out.

Per square foot tends to be the most economical rate as some companies can send in 2 employees and complete an entire house cleaning in 2-3 hours or less and you are paying one rate versus paying per hour. This allows companies not to price gouge or extend their cleaning times out.

Did you know

  • If you clean for two hours, you burn 200 calories?
  • 70% of dust particles are comprised of dead skin flakes.
  • The average person spends 87% of their time indoors - make cleaning your home a priority.
  • Mouthwash can clean your floors
  • You should flush your toilet with the seat closed to stop the exposure of germs from spreading throughout your home
  • Ketchup is also a great cleaner for brass and copper
  • Lemons are a natural cleaner and disinfectant
  • Sinks have more germs than a bathroom toilet
  • Many germs will live on dry surfaces (such as toys) for several hours and moist surfaces (like bathroom sinks) for up to three days
  • When you spray, walk away! Many antibacterial cleaners are designed to be left on surfaces for 30-60 seconds before wiping them off.
  • The food inside will pick up the taste and odor of the cleaning solution, therefore NEVER use disinfectants or bleach in the fridge. Simply warm soapy water will work. If the refrigerator is empty, then it is okay, you must leave the door open for several hours to allow it to air out before using it.
  • Place a few drops of lemon juice or essential oil on your vacuum filter after you clean your vacuum or change the bag and your house will freshen up in no time.

Tipping your house cleaner is generally not expected, it is a very nice gesture and preferably in cash. Bonuses are also a plus, especially for the recurring clientele.

The next time you are calling around for quotes, please remember the work that goes into someone else cleaning up your mess or the mess of your family! What is it worth to you?

In a realistic world, understanding the strain cleaning has on a body, you come to appreciate a house cleaning services effort more and understand the cost is worth it.

The bending, the scrubbing, the exposure to the products, essentially, the house cleaner is being exposed to someone else’s mess and germs. They are risking their health to keep your home clean and comfortable for you. They want to please you!

Most house cleaning services are small businesses

They are BUSINESSES and NOT charities

Trust me when I say, they appreciate regular business and clientele

Support your small businesses and if you have a regular house cleaning service, a dog walker, or a regular assistant, and you can afford to pay them as everything is shutting down, please do.

They might be at risk of losing their businesses!
