Treating Chronic Pain with the Infrared Sauna

Treating Chronic Pain with Infrared Sauna Treatments

How do you treat your chronic pain? So many people have given me advice. We have blogged about this prior. I am honestly tired of muscle relaxers that are not working, waiting on doctors to figure out what they can do, pending test results.

Let’s talk saunas. There are many different types of saunas. Wood burning, electrically heated, manufactured, smoke, steam and infrared.

Recently I have tried something new, the infrared sauna.

I went outside of my element a bit and though I dreaded it, I did it. Mustering up the energy after weeks and weeks of feeling defeated, in constant pain, crying, and my body fighting itself, I made a same-day appointment, wrestled myself out of the house and showed up to my appointment. Skeptical and tired yet determined for relief.

Before booking my appointment, for weeks, I read up on the materials on the internet.

Upon arrival, the temperature was pre-set for me at 122 degrees Fahrenheit, the sauna was very private, I took off all my clothes (this was recommended), and it was relaxing almost immediately.

Are you wondering how this infrared sauna differs from a regular sauna?

The infrared sauna differs from the traditional sauna in the following ways:

Infrared saunas use infrared light to heat the body from within, they do not use steam, instead, they use heaters. The heat is a lower humidity and the air temperature is lower.

In turn, this promotes:

  • relaxation
  • detoxification - There appears to be controversy regarding detoxification. Detoxification happens within the liver and the kidneys. Sweating is the body's way of keeping cool.
  • weight loss
  • relief from sore muscles
  • relief from joint pain such as arthritis
  • clear and tighter skin
  • improved circulation
  • help for people with chronic fatigue syndrome

Either way, no matter what the controversial benefits between the different saunas are, my experience happened to be wonderful.

Within 10 minutes of sitting in the infrared sauna, I was dripping sweat in very weird places, I, however, did not feel like I was sweating. It was just dripping. I was not smelly at all. It was not hot. I felt good. I felt the tension in my muscles is relieved. I have not felt this in quite some time. After my 30-minute session expired, I felt relaxed. I went home and took a shower, I went to bed very quickly (without sleep meds), I woke up pain-free (except for a crick in my neck). For one day, my muscles and bones are pain-free. I really feel that it is due to the experience of the infrared sauna.

The cost of my 30-minute session was $25. The new spa within my area, name Transitions Float VA, is where I chose to visit. They specialize in float pods also. I did sign up for a membership as the “float pods” are said to be very beneficial for chronic pain relief too. They are filled with 1,000 pounds of Epsom salt.

I am very excited to monitor my progress. I am hopeful. Next week I will have MRI’s on my neck and spine for the additional pain I feel. In the meantime, Transitions Float VA Spa is offering specials. The cost is not that pricey compared to the pain I feel.

I shall keep everyone updated on the continued results.

Please let me know if you have experienced the infrared sauna or if you have other alternative methods of treating your chronic pain!
